A website listing all your offerings is an essential element of online business. Your customers know where they can find and buy your products. It is like having a common store for your customers all around the globe. However, a website with a bunch of product descriptions alone cannot attract your customers to visit it unless you are a very strong brand. So how do you get people to visit your website?
One of the most important things for businessmen is to convince visitors that there's more value available on their website than just products or services. People like to read reviews, they like to hear what experts have to say about that market, and they like to read about relevant and interesting things related to that market. All of this takes constant communication and interaction with customers, and a blog is a great way to do that.
When it comes to generating interest about your products or services, advertising and email marketing cannot cut the bill. Blogs, on the other hand, can provide a great way to increase traffic and generate a lot repeat visits -- if updated regularly with relevant and informative posts and complemented with the necessary SEO efforts.
Blogs usually have posts that are more generic and informative about the industry your product falls into, or are simply general information about the product without looking like a marketing piece. For eg: If you sell a particular brand of sports shoes, your blog can contain posts on the shoes that are appropriate for various sports, or what features a person should look for while purchasing a pair of shoes for running.
You can market some of these articles over various social networking sites and submit them over relevant websites. Remember, people are always looking for information over the Internet before purchasing anything; so if your blog can provide them with with that information, you end up educating them as well as proving your expertise, which goes a long way in developing trust.
Recently, I answered a similar question on LinkedIn.com (comment no. 8) where a company wanted to know if they could use their blog to promote their products and allow RSS syndication. It is definitely a good idea as long as your posts don’t look like a marketing gimmick and you are genuinely providing valuable information to your customers. And the true essence of the blog lies in the ability to display feedbacks from customer. These customer inputs are not just feedback about your product; they could include feedbacks of the kind of features they are looking for in a product, or what are the drawbacks. Comments like these can help you understand your customers better without investing much in market research.
If you maintain your blog regularly and respond to comments on it in a professional manner, it can go a long way in creating credibility, which can have a very positive effect on your sales.
